$5 for Freedom: Building Our Sustainer Base Together
Every strong movement has a backbone. It’s about more than just passion, turnout, and good intentions. $5 for Freedom is about stability.
This is not a short-term push.
This is a Sustainer Initiative—designed to build long-term, independent power for Camel City United Indivisible.
Why 500 Matters
Here’s the vision:
- 500 members
- $5 a month
- $60 a year
That’s $30,000 a year in grassroots funding. Not controlled by corporations. Not dependent on outside donors. Not vulnerable to political pressure. Powered by us.
Last year taught us something important.
With just a few thousand dollars—around $2,500 at key moments—we were able to grow, organize, mobilize, and deliver real impact.
Now imagine what we can do with stability.
With planning.
With confidence.
With independence.
That’s what this initiative is about.
Where We Are Now
Right now (February 2026), we have: 25 sustainers.
That’s 25 people who have already said:
“I believe in this work. I’m investing in it. I’m in for the long haul.”
That’s important, but our goal is bigger.
We need 475 more.
And I believe we can get there—together.
This Is a Collective Project
Here’s something important:
This is not “Rudy’s fundraiser.”
This is not “the finance team’s project.”
This is our initiative.
Which means we build it together.
We experiment.
We learn.
We improve.
We adjust.
And we do it openly.
That’s why I’m asking for your ideas.
Help Us Grow This to 500
I want your input.
How do we build this base?
Should we:
- 📞 Set up a phone bank to invite members personally?
- 📋 Send out a short survey about why people give?
- 👕 Create special $5 for Freedom shirts?
- 📣 Recognize new sustainers publicly (with permission)?
- 🏁 Run monthly “Sustainer Sprints”?
- 🎯 Celebrate milestones at 100, 200, 300, and beyond?
- ⭕ Create a “500 Circle” or “Freedom Circle”?
What would motivate you?
What would motivate your friends?
What would motivate people who care—but haven’t joined yet?
Let’s Track It. Let’s Celebrate It.
We’re going to talk about this every month.
Not to pressure.
To normalize.
To make sustaining this movement something we’re proud of.
We’ll share progress.
We’ll celebrate growth.
We’ll lift up our sustainers.
Because this is collective achievement.
A Personal Ask
Let me speak plainly.
If CCUI matters to you…
If this community matters to you…
If this work has added something to your life…
Then $5 a month is a powerful way to say:
“I’m invested.”
If you’re already a sustainer: thank you. Truly.
If you’re not yet: now is a great time to join.
And if you have ideas, send them to me.
Email me.
Message me.
Talk to me at meetings.
Let’s build this to 500—together.
Freedom is sustained.
Power is built.
Movements last when people commit.
Let’s do this.
From Vision to System: How We’ll Build the $5 for Freedom Base
I shared our vision for $5 for Freedom—our goal of building 500 sustainers at $5 a month to create long-term stability for this movement.
The vision is strong.
The numbers make sense.
The commitment is real.
Now it’s time to talk about something just as important:
The system.
Because good ideas don’t succeed on passion alone. They succeed on structure.
Naming the Challenge Honestly
Let me be transparent.
Right now, one person knows most of our 5,000-member network.
Me.
That’s not a point of pride.
That’s a vulnerability.
It means too much information flows through one person.
It means too much responsibility sits in one place.
It means we are more dependent than we should be.
And if we’re serious about building shared leadership, we have to change that.
We’re Not Chasing Strangers. We’re Activating Our Own People.
This initiative is not about going out and finding new supporters.
We already have them.
They’ve signed up.
They’ve marched.
They’ve donated.
They’ve shown up.
They’ve shared our posts.
They are already part of this movement.
Our job is to invite them into deeper commitment.
That takes intention.
That takes coordination.
That takes systems.
Building a “500 Team”
One idea is to form a small, trusted 500 Team.
Their job would be simple:
Help grow and steward our sustainer base.
That might mean:
- ✔️ Making personal calls
- ✔️ Sending personal texts
- ✔️ Following up with interested members
- ✔️ Welcoming new sustainers
- ✔️ Keeping records updated
Not cold calls. Relationship calls.
People talking to people they know—or people they’re connected to through this movement. Creating Call Lists
Another idea is this:
I can provide curated lists. Not all 5,000 at once. Not dumped randomly. But organized lists. For example:
- 100 members who attend regularly
- 100 who’ve donated before
- 100 who’ve volunteered
- 100 who’ve hosted events
These are warm contacts. People who already care. We start there.
Tracking Progress Together
We also need transparency.
That means:
- 📊 Monthly updates
- 📈 Public milestones
- 🎉 Celebrating growth
When we hit 50.
When we hit 100.
When we hit 200.
When we hit 300.
We name it.
We celebrate it.
Recognition and Identity
We’re also exploring ways to recognize sustainers.
Not to elevate anyone above others.
But to build culture.
Ideas include:
- 👕 “Member of the 500” shirts
- 🏷️ Badges at events
- ⭕ “Freedom Circle” recognition
- 📣 Social media shout-outs (with permission)
People want to belong to something meaningful.
We should honor that.
Data, Respectfully Managed
Another tool could be a short, voluntary survey:
- Are you a sustainer?
- Would you like to be?
- Can someone follow up with you?
- How do you prefer to be contacted?
This helps us organize without invading privacy.
Respect matters.
This Is Part of Shared Leadership
All of this connects to something bigger.
We are moving from:
One person holding systems to many people holding responsibility.
From informal networks to intentional infrastructure.
From “Rudy knows” to “We know together.” That’s growth.
What We’re Asking For Now
So here is the call to action.
If you want to help build this:
- ✔️ Volunteer for the 500 Team
- ✔️ Help with calling or texting
- ✔️ Help with tracking and reporting
- ✔️ Help with recognition and outreach
Let us know.
If you have ideas for better systems, share them.
This is not fixed.
This is evolving.
Let’s build this to 500—together.
