John Lewis Voting Rights People’s Movement Assembly
Saturday, July 18, 2026 • 11 AM – 2 PM
St. Paul United Methodist Church, 2400 Dellabrook Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27105

The People’s Movement Assembly in Winston-Salem is one of several Freedom Assemblies taking place across North Carolina on July 18th. Ours is an organizing meeting designed to bring neighbors together, identify practical solutions, and commit to concrete actions that strengthen civic participation throughout Forsyth County between August and Election Day.

WHY WE’RE GATHERING

Every movement has a moment when conversations become commitments.

Over the past several months, Camel City United Indivisible volunteers have been out canvassing in neighborhoods across Forsyth County. We weren’t just asking people to vote. We were asking a deeper question: What kind of community do we want to build together?

We’ve knocked on thousands of doors, met neighbors where they are, hosted public forums, trained new volunteers, joined community events, celebrated Juneteenth, and listened to what people care about most.

One thing became clear: People want more than another election. They want stronger neighborhoods. They want to know their neighbors. They want leaders they can trust. They want a voice. They want real ways to make a difference.

That’s why we’re bringing our community together for the John Lewis Voting Rights People’s Movement Assembly on Saturday, July 18.

WHAT MAKES THIS ASSEMBLY DIFFERENT

This is more than a meeting. Inspired by the life and legacy of Congressman John Lewis, it’s a chance for us to connect, learn, organize, and start building a civic community that continues workin together long after Election Day.

Rather than just talking about democracy, we’ll spend the afternoon practicing it.

We’ll start with a working lunch, where you’ll meet other neighbors and talk through the challenges facing our community. Then you’ll take part in three short breakout sessions built to turn ideas into action.

THE AFTERNOON AT A GLANCE

  • Welcome
  • Working Lunch
  • Breakout Sessions
  • Community Report Back
  • Action Commitments
  • Good Trouble Closing

THE BREAKOUT SESSIONS

Participants will divide into facilitated small groups. Rather than discussing different topics, every breakout group will work through the same three organizing questions so we can compare ideas, identify common priorities, and leave with a shared action plan.

Together, each group will explore:

  • What are the biggest barriers to civic participation and voting in Forsyth County today?
  • What opportunities exist this fall to increase participation, leadership, and voter engagement?
  • What specific actions should we commit to between August and November?

During the report-back session, we’ll identify the ideas with the broadest support and begin building a practical Fall Action Agenda for Forsyth County. We’ll close with a Good Trouble call to action, inspired by Congressman Lewis’s challenge to every generation.

MORE THAN ONE DAY

This Assembly is the beginning of the next chapter for our community. Our goal is to help neighbors move from meeting one another to leading together. Through house meetings, community action teams, leadership development, and year-round civic engagement, we’re building the kind of relationships that strengthen democracy from the ground up.

John Lewis reminded us that democracy is not something we inherit, it’s something we build. One conversation. One neighborhood. One act of courage. One person at a time.

This summer has been about getting ready for that work, and on July 18, we invite you to take the next step with us.

By the end of the afternoon, participants will have helped create the John Lewis PMA Fall Action Agenda—a community-driven roadmap identifying priority actions, the volunteers willing to lead them, and the next steps for strengthening democracy across Forsyth County.
